Bio
As a native of Michigan and a stage actress for many years, Susannah Conn, finally settled in NYC at the tale end of a national tour. In her spare time on the road, she picked up the guitar and dusty music books from libraries across America; East Texas country tunes, folk fake books, and Bessie Smith’s Jazz. All these styles are evident on her debut EP, Hidden Treasure, co-produced by Neil Nathan (Californication Soundtrack) and Riley McMahon (Spottiswoode & His Enemies) and mastered by Fred Kevorkian (Regina Spektor, Ryan Adams).
More than a singer/songwriter, Susannah is a storyteller who connects to the universal. Her songs will invite you to weave your own lover’s tale, soul search for undiscovered islands of your identity, and even contemplate social injustices. However, her love for a quixotic turn of phrase and nostalgia for decades passed will have you singing and dancing along like you’re in some Prohibition-era speakeasy. All this delivered through a voice that rings of one of the great dames of country music. Co Producer Neil Nathan says, “Susannah has a very unique and authentic country and folk mix to her voice that’s reminiscent of Joan Baez and Dolly Parton. It can convey total innocence and purity of soul in one moment and world weary womanly wisdom in the next. I’ve never heard a female singer use the kind of phrasing she does on her folk songs, a la Gordon Lightfoot or Jim Croce. It sucks me in every time. She’s a true original. Riley and I feel blessed to have been a part of this record.”
